the political bits
For many, the only serious business
of the LGBTA is having fun, or perhaps our welfare remit - and that's fine.
Yet for those who do care, the LGBTA is becoming increasingly effective at
representation, campaigning and awareness-raising - and we'd be delighted
for you to get involved yourself if it's an area of interest.
priority campaigns
The key issues the LGBTA has policy to campaign on on an ongoing basis are democratically decided by our full membership. You can read a little about our current priority campaigns.
student politics
The LGBTA is at the heart of Durham Students' Union, which also has a comprehensive policy of support for LGBT students. The LGBTA also takes a full place on the national LGBT student stage, through the National Union of Students LGBT Campaign.
political activities
The LGBTA involves itself in a number of different representational and campaigning activities, ranging from police liaison to pickets and our annual Awareness Week. To read reports on some specific events or just get a flavour of what we do, check this section on our political activities... or just view some photos!
specific issues
The complex issues of blood donation and heterosexist discrimination in student funding were both taken up by the LGBTA in 2003 - with huge success in the latter case. Earlier in 2003 an LGBT-related controversy had blown up of its own accord. Get the full lowdown on all these issues.

want something more done?
The LGBTA is still building up the campaigning and representational side of its activities. What campaigning and/or representational work do you think we should be doing on behalf of LGBT students in Durham and Stockton, and what information should we be providing? Please contact us in confidence - or directly e-mail our Campaigns Officer.
